TEN of LIFE’S ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS

This post was inspired by a 5th grade boy who, when asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, had the courage to say that he wanted to be himself.  And that’s how he dressed for going to school on the day students were asked to appear as the adults they wanted to be when they grew up.  He went as himself in his favorite tee shirt and shorts.  Kudos to this young man with such integrity at an early age. He did not cave in to the canned expectations of the adults in charge.  This kind of quiet confidence is rare among young people and even among many adults.

We begin with these first two essential questions, not what do you want to do, but rather, who are you and who do you want to be.

Who are you? How do you identify and describe yourself?

Who do you want to be? Are the answers to this question and # 1 in sync?

What’s your plan for the coming year? Are you happy with that?

What are your most meaningful relationships?

Are you living a healthy life-style? Could it be better?

Are your finances in good shape, your fiduciary trust for yourself & others?

What are your most important sources of joy and pleasure?

Are you taking time to celebrate & appreciate what you have?

What are you not doing that you would like to do? What’s holding you back?

What question is not here that you would like to ask yourself?

There are no simple nor easy answers. My hope is that you’ll take these questions as an exercise in self-reflection that might move you a little farther along on your journey.  Enjoy!

  1. This kid sounds familiar. What I love are your questions. There are a few here that I’ve asked myself in the past, but haven’t always been honest about the answer. Thanks for sharing this story and for helping to deepen the reflection around it.

    1. The kid is a budding genius! Knows way more than he knows he knows and it will be fascinating to watch him come into his own.
Sometimes the best answer to a question is another question and if that takes us a little farther along, all to the good. Thanks for your comment, your continuing support and your good thoughts.
