THE BRIDGE YEAR
The concept of a “gap” year has existed for many years in schools around the world. What it means is that a student takes a year “off” sometime between 10th grade and a second year at the college level. That year has traditionally been between graduation from secondary school and entering a college or university. The year, or a large part of it, is dedicated to some “real world” experience such as an internship, travel or a job that might or might not be related to the student’s career interests. With increased awareness of global issues, many students find international travel and volunteer service very appealing. The most positive benefits are: the opportunity to explore an interest or a passion beyond the walls of a school; regaining focus and purpose; an exciting and engaging learning experience.
