DAY TWENTY-THREE SOUNDS
Spend the next few minutes listening. After reading these words and descriptions, shut your eyes to listen and “see what you hear.” Notice if there are sounds far away or sounds close by.
How would you describe those sounds to someone who is deaf and cannot hear?
There are soothing sounds and disturbing sounds, a gentle breeze moving through the trees, rustling branches and leaves or a siren at first far away then louder as it comes closer and then fades away again. Bells and chimes, the humming of machinery, fingers typing on a keyboard, the sound of our own breathing.
What kinds of sounds do you prefer and what do you to to avoid those you do not like? What kind of music appeals to you and why? What about the sounds of silence? How would you describe those? Are there familiar sounds you like to revisit and enjoy? Water makes different sounds from a gurgling stream to crashing waves and partners with other forces to create the sounds. Absorb the sounds of the natural world and let them become part of what nourishes your soul.

Do you hear what I hear?
Said the night wind to the little lamb
Do you see what I see?
(Do you see what I see?)
Way up in the sky, little lamb
Do you see what I see?
(Do you see what I see?)
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite
With a tail as big as a kite
Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear?
(Do you hear what I hear?)
Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear?
(Do you hear what I hear?)
A song, a song high above the trees
With a voice as big as the sea
With a voice as big as the sea
Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king
Do you know what I know? (Do you know what I know?)
In your palace warm, mighty king
Do you know what I know? (Do you know what I know?)
A Child, a Child shivers in the cold
Let us bring him silver and gold
Let us bring him silver and gold
Said the king to the people everywhere
Listen to what I say! (Listen to what I say!)
Pray for peace, people, everywhere
Listen to what I say! (Listen to what I say!)
The Child, the Child sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light
