AWARENESS

While driving through Texas this past week (OKC to Houston to Santa Fe) we stayed at two Texas State Parks, highly recommended (Lake Fairfield and South Llano River).  We also hunkered down in Houston for several days near the huge medical center, much of which is operated under the University of Texas logo.  While negotiating the interstates, freeways and roads in and around Houston, the electronic signs flashed this message: “Work Zone Awareness Week: Orange You Glad You Slowed Down.”    I had no idea it was work zone awareness week as I was simply unaware. Because we spend a significant amount of time on the road, I have seen more than my share of orange barrels and cones.

I am unaware of most national days, weeks, months and years.  However, while being made aware that April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, I am aware of that issue all year long.  Is a public reminder once a year a good thing?  Does it accomplish the objective of reducing significantly the incidence of child abuse?  I don’t know.  How about gun control?   I know the kids from MSD in Parkland have been working extremely hard now for over a year and there are some signs the NRA is losing some of their lobbying power of influencing politicians by big financial contributions.

I know this is the Chinese year of the pig, the 12th sign in the Chinese zodiac.  What are we to make of that?   Pig is not thought to be a smart animal in China. It likes sleeping and eating and becomes fat. Thus it usually features laziness and clumsiness.  Pig has been used as a derogatory name when describing other people’s behavior that may be detrimental to both themselves and others. As it turns out, pigs are fairly smart animals and some people even have them as pets.

I wondered to myself what today is besides April 12.  So I peeked and here’s the list for today and tomorrow.  Make of them what you will.  I like the idea of a silent day, shutting off the noise.  I did not check out the lists for next week or this year.  I already have more than enough.  Have fun!

By the way, who decides all of these special interests and how do they get them on the calendar?

  1. That safety cone in the picture is mine. I’ve been looking for it. Next time you see it pick it up and i’ll get it from you. Just don’t get killed running around in the middle of the road! I am fired up about Peach Cobbler Day! Rick

    1. I have an extra cone, also an orange barrel. Glad to donate to a worthy cause! Looking for licorice today, and some silence.
