WINTER SOLSTICE (in 55 words)

Hours of sunlight increase and decrease, a predictable schedule. A calendar of days, weeks, months, one more year. Come December 21, in the northern hemisphere, the sun appears at its southernmost point along the horizon. The northward trek starts again, lengthening daylight hours.
